World's Largest Listed Online Gaming Operator Selects Open Source Software to Boost Scalability and Performance
San Francisco - October 16, 2007 - Terracotta, Inc. today announces an agreement to provide infrastructure software to PartyGaming Plc, the world's largest listed online gaming company. Terracotta's infrastructure software will ensure high availability, enable PartyGaming's business to expand more easily and provide higher performance for its online gaming brands that include PartyPoker.com, PartyCasino.com, PartyBets.com and PartyBingo.com. The Terracotta deployment will involve clusters of several hundred gaming servers.
PartyGaming's online gaming applications present several technical hurdles concerning scalability and performance. The software infrastructure needs to handle thousands of simultaneous players, some playing for fun only (such as in the U.S.) and those playing for real money elsewhere in the world. It also has to ensure that a complete track record of every user's actions is maintained, and provide performance that delivers an exciting and entertaining playing experience that responds instantly at all times.
PartyGaming cited Terracotta's ability to coordinate and share data between servers with a 10-fold reduction in network utilization over alternatives as a key factor in the selection process. BD Goel, PartyGaming's chief operating officer, said, "Terracotta's ability to cluster hundreds of servers with much lower network utilization than alternative approaches results in very high performance and was a major consideration for PartyGaming." He added, "Terracotta will provide a key scalability and performance component in the standard software stack we use to build all of our applications."
"Online gaming presents developers and operators with the significant task of delivering linear scale and total fault tolerance, simultaneously," said Ari Zilka, CTO and co-founder of Terracotta. "Our unique Network-Attached Memory approach to sharing application data between nodes simultaneously provides scalability and high availability, with the best possible performance. We are excited to have been selected for such a mission-critical use case."
