Terracotta is the Ticket for Premières Loges
March 12, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO — March 12, 2007—Terracotta, Inc., a leader in advanced enterprise Java scalability solutions, today announced that Premières Loges, a new online event ticketing software vendor, has implemented Terracotta to achieve high availability for its Tomcat and Spring-based application for ticket transactions. Premières Loges is a fast growing Canadian alternative to global online vendors that distinguishes itself by developing close relationships to important venues such as the Theater St. Denis in Montreal. Premières Loges, using Terracotta technology, has successfully hosted ticket sales for blockbuster events such as a recent performance by singer/songwriter Norah Jones.
Premières Loges chose Terracotta for its simplicity and low total cost of implementation. The company needed a high availability solution in a very short time frame and did not have an extensive development team to implement a complex API-based solution. "We wanted a solution that could complement Spring and Tomcat, which are the foundation of our lightweight approach to development, and we really liked the fact that Terracotta provides a simple drop-in approach that does not require the extensive development effort we have seen from other solutions," said Francois Lacoursiere, CTO of Premières Loges. He added, "Terracotta's technology is robust and enabled us to meet the demanding time frames that are required by our event schedules."
While Premières Loges's selection hinged on Terracotta's ability to provide high availability without intrusion into the code base of their existing flagship application, there were other decision drivers. The ticketing company's technical staff also found that Terracotta's JVM-level clustering disseminates fine-grained changes only to nodes that reference changed objects. They deemed this approach superior to alternatives that move around coarser-grained changes to all nodes via multi-cast.
Mr. Lacoursiere reinforced, "We looked at some popular clustering alternatives but felt they were greedy about change propagation - too much network chatter. Terracotta propagates changes in an on-demand fashion, which we feel is a much better approach."
"Premières Loges relies largely on an open source platform for delivering their application today. Terracotta provides them the ability to use open source frameworks and cluster as needed. Premières Loges sees this as all the Enterprise Java they need," said Ari Zilka, CTO and founder of Terracotta. "These capabilities are truly differentiating for Terracotta, and we know they will enable Premières Loges to achieve low cost scalability and availability for their Tomcat-based ticketing application well into the future."
Rod Johnson, CEO of Interface 21 and founder of the Spring Framework, said, "Premières Loges's selection and successful deployment of Spring-based applications clustered using Terracotta is the latest example of how powerful lightweight stacks that tap best-of-breed open source components can support business-critical applications."
Norah Jones Hits Montreal
Soon after the installation of Terracotta, Premières Loges was faced with a potential scalability challenge: a Norah Jones concert in Montreal. The popular singer's show sold out rapidly and resulted in a high demand being placed on the Premières Loges ticketing servers - thousands of requests per second.
Since Terracotta does not use Java serialization, and only fine-grained object changes traverse the network, Premières Loges was able to handle the high ticketing volumes of this concert with ease, with a more resilient application stack than they had ever had before.
"We had very high traffic volumes for that show, but everything went very smoothly," added Premières Loges's Lacoursiere. "There was no noticeable loss of throughput, despite the increase in reliability that Terracotta provides. It is often very difficult to overcome availability/scalability tradeoffs, but Terracotta provides a new approach that can overcome them."
