TERRACOTTA ADDS RICH VISUALIZATION TO LEADING JAVA CLUSTERING SOLUTION - April 21, 2008

Terracotta Version 2.6 Includes Breakthrough Cluster Visualization and Up to 300 Percent Improvement in Performance

San Francisco—April 21, 2008 - Terracotta, the leader in infrastructure software for enterprise Java scalability, today announced the latest version of the industry's proven open source Java clustering solution, Terracotta version 2.6. Building on the growing adoption of Terracotta, the new version offers a host of new features including breakthrough cluster visualization, improved performance and official support for Tomcat 6.0. It is available immediately for download at www.terracotta.org.

Terracotta lowers costs and simplifies web application deployment by reducing development effort and easing the load on application servers and databases, making it an ideal solution for scaling critical applications. Offering the performance of local memory with the high availability of a database, Terracotta eliminates the unyielding performance and reliability tradeoffs that constrain many Java applications today.

"Finding cost-effective solutions to application scalability is growing in importance as enterprises look for ways to cut costs and to improve the performance of their core applications," according to Maureen Fleming, program director for IDC's Business Process, Integration and Deployment Software research. "Solutions that reduce software licenses and server costs or decrease developer time while improving scalability and performance is well-timed in today's market."

"This is truly a landmark release for Terracotta. The cluster-wide visualization and management capabilities we're adding solidify Terracotta's leading role in making scalability and high availability pluggable infrastructure services, rather than capabilities written into each individual application," said Ari Zilka, chief technology officer and co-founder of Terracotta. "Our customers are telling us that a key part of being an effective scalability solution is delivering both visibility and control of the application cluster at runtime, and Terracotta 2.6 significantly deepens our capabilities on both of these dimensions."

New Features of Terracotta version 2.6 include:

  • Cluster Visualization

Terracotta now provides unmatched cluster monitoring tools that provide a holistic view of the overall health and performance of application clusters. Operators and developers can monitor and visualize a wide range of key application performance metrics, including CPU usage, network and disk activity, Terracotta statistics, object change rates and garbage collection cycles. A powerful graphing tool visualizes all recorded statistics, giving unprecedented visibility into the entire cluster for forensics and correlation of system and application events. In addition to real-time cluster monitoring and statistics gathering, the tool provides cluster management controls. Also announced today, as part of version 2.6, Terracotta is bundling Hyperic SIGAR (System Information Gatherer and Reporter) within it to obtain key operating system and hardware information.

  • Improved Performance

Terracotta 2.6 delivers significant performance improvements, ranging from 30 percent to three times faster. All too often vendors focus on micro-benchmarks, which are often not meaningful in real-world use cases. What Terracotta has done is to build a sophisticated modeling platform that can simulate real-world application and load-profiles. End users will feel the impact of the improvements in Terracotta 2.6 in two ways: out of the box, it is just faster; more importantly, the extra performance means developers spend less time tuning and more time developing.

  • Additional Forge Projects

EHCache and Hibernate integrations, previously available in the core Terracotta kit, are now available as Terracotta Forge Projects at http://forge.terracotta.org. The Terracotta Forge provides a common place for Terracotta and community members to collaborate on Terracotta-specific integrations and projects. With the addition of Hibernate and EHCache integration modules to the Forge, end-users can expect faster issue resolution time and overall higher quality integration between Terracotta, EHCache and Hibernate.

  • Tomcat 6.0 Official Support

Terracotta 2.6 adds official support for the Tomcat 6.0 platform, the latest version of the popular application server developed by the Apache Software Foundation.
